Painters Maroubra

Maroubra takes weather the way few Sydney suburbs do. It faces the open ocean with almost nothing in front of it, so properties here deal with salt, constant wind and hard UV all at once. Salt doesn’t just sit on the surface — it works into every gap it can find, around window frames, under fascias, into any hairline crack in render. On the seaward elevation, the first things to go are usually the metal balustrades and window frames — and once rust is under the paint film, coating over the top of it doesn’t stop it.

The building stock is mostly post-war. Solid 1950s and 60s red brick — houses, semis, and a very large number of three-storey walk-up blocks through Maroubra Junction and back toward South Maroubra. On the face-brick homes, the brick itself is usually fine; it’s the painted timber trim, eaves and fascias that fail first, and they fail from the salt side in. Mixed through it now are rendered rebuilds and duplexes, which look sharp for the first few years and then show every crack the wind opens up.

The walk-up blocks are their own conversation. Most are strata, most have rendered or painted brick common areas, and the older beachfront ones have balconies that have been exposed to salt for sixty years — if there’s spalling concrete or exposed reinforcement, that’s a remedial job before it’s a painting job, and we’ll tell you that rather than coating over it.

Everything we do on a Maroubra exterior starts with washing the salt off. It isn’t optional here — coating over salt is a well-understood way to shorten the life of a finish.
